Have Fun and Stay Safe This New Year’s Eve!

New Year’s Eve is one of the largest celebrations of the year, but also one of the deadliest. Car accidents, pedestrian accidents, drunk driving, fireworks and more can cause catastrophic personal injuries and even wrongful death. Here are some tips to keep you safe as you, your family and friends ring in the New Year.

  • Stick with your friends, and watch out for them.
  • It is easy for things to go out of control during a big celebration like New Year’s. If a situation seems to be escalating or is becoming uncomfortable, get out of the situation.
  • Drunk driving is one of the most common causes of injury and death during New Year’s. While “don’t drink and drive” is an almost universally known adage, sadly, many people still do it. If you plan on drinking, plan for your transportation. Assign a designated driver, call a cab, ride a bus or take an Uber. You don’t want to ring in 2018 from a jail cell or – worse – a hospital room.
  • Even if you aren’t driving under the influence, other people will be. Try to avoid being on the road from 8 p.m. to 2 a.m. These are the peak hours for automobile and pedestrian accidents caused by drunk driving.
  • Perhaps a less common safety tip – be careful what you are sharing on social media!
  • Be aware of anyone who has brought dangerous fireworks, and make sure that if you are lighting fireworks, you follow all instructions. Homeowners can be held criminally and civilly liable for damage and injuries caused by fireworks.

Happy New Year’s, San Jose! Stay safe and have fun!
